Heimweh

A tiny little fact I stumbled upon a few weeks ago, and I just can't leave these things alone...

Homesickness was for a while called the 'Swiss sickness', as it mostly occurred in Swiss mercenaries who in the plains of lowlands of France or Italy were pining for their native mountain landscapes, to the point of desertion, illness or death.
It was after a while linked to the singing of Kuhreihen, a simple melody traditionally played on the horn by the Swiss Alpine herdsmen as they drove their cattle to or from the pasture, and so it was forbidden (by penalty of death) to sing or even whistle such a song in the presence of the Swiss soldiers.
